management of wisdom teeth

The third molars erupt in the mouth anytime after one is 17/18 years of age. That is why they are referred to as wisdom teeth. If there is enough room they pose no problem and will erupt completely in the mouth like any other tooth. The problem arises when there is not enough space.

Problems:

~ Causes gum inflammation.

~ Causes food to get entrapped between the gum and the tooth resulting in decay.

~ May cause decay in the adjacent tooth since it doesn’t allow flossing.

~ May even cause the formation of a cyst.

Any kind of persistent discomfort, pain or swelling indicates removal of the wisdom tooth.

Wisdom teeth that are not removed should continue to be monitored because the potential for developing problems later on still exists. Regular dental visits allow your dentist to evaluate your wisdom teeth and your overall dental health
